Get Rid of Silverfish

Serving the Louisiana & Mississippi Gulf Coast For Over 50 Years

Silverfish are found throughout the U.S. and are typically seen in moist, humid areas in the home, such as bathrooms, basements, and attics. Silverfish are nocturnal and hide during the day. If silverfish are hiding beneath an object and it is moved, they will dart toward another secluded place. Silverfish come out at night to seek food and water. Silverfish prefer dry food such as flour, cereals, pasta, and pet food and sizing in paper including wallpaper and book bindings, and starch in clothing.

Other important sources of food include household dust, dead insects, and certain fungi also. However, silverfish can live for several months without nourishment.

Large numbers of silverfish can invade new homes from surrounding wild areas but silverfish also can come in on lumber, wallboard, and similar products. Freshly laid concrete and green lumber supply humidity, while wallpaper paste provides food. Because these insects can travel long distances while looking for food, it can be difficult to pinpoint the infestation source.

To prevent silverfish infestations, keep basements, laundry rooms, and bathrooms clean and dry. It is recommended to periodically clean out closets, cabinets, and any storage containers that contain food silverfish seek. Silverfish require a lot of moisture so limit humidity in closed places as much as possible. Because collections of magazines and books provide shelter and food, occasionally remove these items from your bookcase and dust them. Keep dry and processed food item in containers with tight lids.
